The secret of a healthy company: information logistics

As a company grows, so does the number of processes, teams and software systems. Multiple departments are created, each with their own systems, tasks and approach. If you don’t think carefully about information logistics, chances are that things will get out of hand. Before you know it, all kinds of systems will emerge that do not connect well with each other. What is information logistics?

 

Eelco: “Business processes often move through different systems and departments. That makes it difficult to structure things properly. At many of the companies I visit, employees work alongside each other. The data is stored in a fragmented way and the chance of inconsistencies between different datasets is high. This causes confusion, delay and errors. At Referit we make sure that the right data is available at the right time, for the right person and in the right place. That’s what we call information logistics.

 

More than an interface

The trick is to capture the data once and then use it in other processes as well. We achieve this by creating smart links between the various applications. Information logistics focuses on structuring the data flows across different departments, processes and systems. At Referit we go one step further. We implement the interfaces and then monitor them from within the process instead of individual links.

 

Referit provides active monitoring at the process level

The concept of information logistics was not conceived at Referit, but the emphasis on operational monitoring is unique. Eelco: “For us, the work does not end when a link is realized. We actively keep monitoring. As soon as we see that something is going wrong, we link it back to the customer at process level. So we don’t tell the client: at noon there was a problem with coupling B to system A and C. We explain that something went wrong between 12 and 13 o’clock with the production of the packing slips. This is understandable for the business and prevents a lot of hassle and research”.
